Notes on a hand-set pleat

A machine can gather fabric in seconds. It cannot decide where the gather should be denser, or how to let the fullness release across a shoulder rather than bunch at a seam.

Every pleat on the Gathered Hour Top is set by hand, pinned against a form and then stitched. Across a run, that is the single largest labour cost in our workshop, and it is the reason the piece is produced in the smallest quantity of anything we make.

The visible payoff is small and specific: the fullness sits high and collapses cleanly under a jacket instead of creating bulk. The invisible payoff is fit range — a hand-set gather can flex across two sizes of frame in a way a fixed machine gather cannot.

It is a detail almost nobody will name out loud. They will simply notice the top fits better than it should, and keep reaching for it.
